The trouble with this kind of thing is that it rapidly becomes the equivalent of WordArt - a signifier of amateurism.

I personally miss the magical era of Wordart, MS Works, Clippy, Desktop Destroying Screensaves, Winamp skins and ICQ

The unbounded creativity and pushing of boundaries of that era has given way to a/b tested, reduced to the boring mean, slick and lifeless software that has removed all the joy, the discovery, the experimentation in favor of maximally enshittified sludge of boring productivity.

The current experimentation phase of AI has tiny sparks of it, until they will be snuffed out again.

“Professional” in this context is boring, average and dystopian really, a sign of the time where our Personal Computer has become an extension of corporate productivity rather than our creative playground.

      > Desktop Destroying Screensaves.

There is a guy on YT who does these mini-anime (multi episode) of stick figures fighting each other. The opening sequence happens on a PC desktop against a virus. It is just amazing and that whole sequence as an animated gif would make a great screen saver. Now if it could be made dynamic so it works on the existing screen (like xmelt) it would be great.

I would actually settle for the original (non dynamic) one. The one thing you would miss is the sound effects which are also great.

I agree. I installed serenityos the other day and I love it. The vibe is so - that era. And I love that the only applications that will be built for it are applications the community makes for fun.

Imagine emotion or sentiment enhanced dynamic text on ebooks for kids.

Sounds like an overmind telling a kid what to feel. Imagine the dissonance one must feel when one would not agree with their own feelings with the way software tells you to feel.

Or maybe teaching the child about the future possibilites and metaphors that symbols / characters need not be static. They can morph, shapeshift just like Rorschach's inkblot. Similar to the movie Arrival. Plus it is fun.

      Why?

I would love more graphic novel like storytelling. The next evolution would be the text itself becomes another vector for invoking the feeling of environment and so on. If currently the story environment is about nature, trees, so the text would reflect that.

The following is too dynamic but it illustrates the possibilities.

Video doesn't play for me in Firefox on macOS ("No video with supported format and MIME type found")

  • kazinator 13 days ago

Same here; FF on Windows and Linux.

I could download it and try VLC on it, but that's the sort of thing you only do for pr0n.

It's because the video is using HEVC/H.265 which isn't enabled in Firefox. From some rudimentary research, it may be possible to modify some settings in about:config to enable it.

      > Supported for devices with hardware support (the range is the same as Edge) on Windows only. Enabled by default in Nightly and can be enabled via the media.wmf.hevc.enabled pref in about:config. 10-bit or higher colors are not supported.

Seems to work on Android as well. Unless they changed the video format in the meantime or added more.
