[sigh/]

While demonstrating for "Caliphate" may really boost the demonstrators' in-group cred, and imaging some sort of Caliphate may really push their emotional buttons ...when was the last time that any Caliphate-form government actually functioned well in the real world, delivering a reasonably stable and prosperous state, over space and time?

The vast majority of providing decent government, sustained and at scale, is boring details - which you have sustain, at scale. No cool-sounding or imagined-great ideology will magically do that. And the ideologues are usually far more hindrance than help. And for such purposes, it doesn't much matter whether the ideology is Caliphate, or monarchy, or Communism, or Libertarianism, or techno-utopianism, or something else.

I think the last Caliphate was the Ottoman Empire, which ran from 1517 until 1924, and was reasonably stable and prosperous by the standards of the time?
